Youth Ministry - Confirmation

Guidelines for Choosing a Sponsor

Selecting a sponsor is a serious decision. A sponsor walks the confirmand’s faith journey with him or her. This can be the most important relationship that forms during the process. A unique relationship can grow between the sponsor and the confirmand so it is important that the sponsor is chosen carefully. The confirmand should make the final decision with the help of parents. It is very important that the confirmand ask the person to be her or his sponsor, so that the confirmand takes ownership of the confirmation process from the beginning.

Below are the guidelines for selecting a sponsor:

  • Canon Law states that a sponsor must be a confirmed adult who receives the Eucharist, practices the faith by regular attendance at Liturgy and gives evidence in his/her daily life as a witness to this faith.
  • Sponsors should be an older person who has had some life experience. Incarnation asks that sponsors be 21 or older.
  • If at all possible, sponsors should be a member of this parish, but sponsors from the surrounding areas are acceptable as long as it is understood that all events on the schedule should be attended.
  • Sponsors may not be a parent of one of the other youth going through Confirmation at the same time.
  • The sponsor should be a person who can relate and talk with youth easily. Sponsors need to be good listeners.
  • If one is unable to find a sponsor, then the Confirmation Team can and will help in the selection.
