Adult Faith Formation Opportunities
We have several ongoing and one-time only faith formation and educational opportunities for adults. No fees (unless for Nursery or occasional book fee where indicated).
Catholicism Series: We are showing Father Robert Barron’s ten-part DVD series, which covers major themes of our Catholic faith on designated Wednesday evenings (see Home page for detailed info on specific dates), as well as on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 am in the Conference Room. A discussion follows the 45-minute to an hour video showing. Each video presents a different theme. No ongoing commitment. Nursery is provided for the Wednesday evening sessions if reserved in advance. No fee required.
Tables of Seven: Seven people to a table that is. This is a Bible study that meets between the Sunday morning liturgies (from 10:30 until 11:15 am) to break open the Scripture readings for that Sunday to determine applicability to daily living. The group uses the online series Emmaus Journey. Copies of the Scripture reading with probing questions are provided. The group currently meets in the Library (second door on your right in the CF hallway). (We’ll move to the Parish Hall to form more “tables of 7″. No ongoing commitment required. Families are welcome to use the Nursery at no fee.
MOMs (Monday Morning Moms) Bible Study: All moms (and grandmothers) are welcome to attend an ongoing Bible study using the book “Train Up a Mom” as our guide. This book delves into stories of women in the Bible, which are used as a springboard for discussions on how their faith journeys as wives and mothers apply to our faith journeys in those same roles. Each chapter stands on its own, so it’s never too late to start. We meet every other Monday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 am in room 8 of the Christian Formation hallway. Remaining sessions are 2/27, 3/5, 3/19, 4/16, 4/30, 5/7, 5/21 & 6/4. We have a book for you for a small fee. Nursery is provided for $5.00 per month no matter how many children you have. Won’t you join us. Call Nancy at the parish office (434-973-4381) or nancy@incarnationparish.org.
Theresa of Avila “Foundations” Series: Father Gregory facilitates a discussion based on Theresa of Avila’s book about her efforts to reform and found Carmelite monasteries in mid-16th century Spain. Avila’s book provides insights into the spiritual life that are amazingly forthright and applicable to our times. The group meets on Wednesday evenings (when the Catholicism Series is not shown) in the Conference Room (first door on your left as you enter the Christian Formation classroom hallway) from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. No ongoing commitment required. Just come and see how you like it – then you can purchase the book. All are welcome!
TNT (Theatre & Theology): After seeing a really good flick, don’t you typically want to talk about it with family and friends? Well, now’s your chance to do just that. At least once a month, Father Gregory shows a movie (the “theatre” part) after which he facilitates a lively discussion on the faith themes displayed therein (the “theology” part). Even if you already saw the movie being featured, come see it again and be amazed at what you and others experience viewing the movie from a faith perspective. Movies are shown on Friday evenings promptly at 7:00 pm in the Parish Activities Center (stone bldg. across from parish office entrance to the main bldg). No RSVP required unless Nursery is needed. Bring popcorn or other treat to share if you like. Watch bulletin, Christian Formation bulletin board (across from ladies restroom) or check this page for date and description of next featured film.
The Bible Plain & Simple Audio Series by Bill Creasy, Ph.D.: Meets on Monday evenings through 6/25/12 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Contact Mary Ellen Bambrick at 434-973-6803 for more info.
Hispanic Bible Study: This is a Bible study in Spanish. Meets on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 until 9:00 pm in the Library.
Sunday Scripture Study: Meets on Thursday mornings from 10:00 until noon in the Library.
Tuesday Scripture Study: Meets Tuesday mornings at 9:00am in the Library. Contact Dave Russell 973-6587
Thursday Morning Scripture Study: Meets Thursday mornings at 10:00 in the Library. Contact Ray Haas 978-4087
Thursday Evening Old Testament Scripture Group: This group is currently using an audio series focusing on a study of the prophets from a Jewish perspective by a rabbi, who works closely with Bill Creasy, Ph.D. (“The Bible Plain & Simple”). Meets every other Thursday evening from 6:45 until 9:00 pm. in the Library. Contact facilitator Sharon Packett at 434-973-5659 for more info.
Justice & Charity Faith Formation Opportunities: see our Justice & Charity link or contact our Justice & Charity Minister Kristen Schenk at the parish office.
Cursillo Small Groups: Cursillo is alive and well at Incarnation. Men’s and women’s spiritual retreats are held regularly, after which participants form small groups. Contact Mary Balsam at the parish office (434-973-4381) for more info.
Our Nursery
“Every effort to make society sensitive to the importance of the family is a great service to humanity.” – Pope John Paul II
We believe that faith formation is both never-ending and continual. We also believe that parents have primary responsibility for passing on the faith to the next generation, but that parents cannot give what they do not have. Those two beliefs are the impetus behind the priority we place on having a well-equipped and staffed Nursery, so that parents can realistically meet those responsibilities. In addition, our Caregivers are provided an hourly wage and have been either trained in early childhood education or have equivalent experience. Most importantly, they view their role as a ministry of the utmost importance.
The Parish Nursery is available at no fee for children 1 year up to 4 years of age during the following Sunday weekend Masses–9:00 am, 11:30 am and 1:30 pm (Hispanic), on a first come, first serve basis. The number of children is limited to 18 when 3 Caregivers are on duty (12 children when 2 Caregivers are present). We also offer Nursery for Sacramental Prep and other adult faith formation sessions as noted in the weekly Bulletin or as described on this website.
